*March 2001

This month the King made an announcement. He was looking for a new Kings Guard. Being a Mercenary he opened this contest to everyone and agreed to treat these soldiers as hired men rather than having them engaged in fief service. Also, the winner of the contest would be his Captain of the Guard. This attracted many men. Amador de la Hoya was first to sign. The battle was long and furious. Many were wounded. After fifteen minutes of fighting Amador de la Hoya had the most kills with his two-handed sword and was thus dubbed Captain de la Hoya. How appropriate that the Captain of the Guard is a mercenary and his job is to protect the Mercenary King.

Declared war on Erin as thus:

"To The Populace- It hath been a most prosperous year for the Bentwood Raider Mercenaries of York, and we hath gathered much treasure and fame. So much so that we have attracted too much attention and are losing secretive posture. This means we cannot accept all the jobs we would like. To remedy this, we accepted one job. It is a war. Wars are expensive and usually increase fame. However, this war has a strange twist. Winning this war will reduce our fame. Losing this war will reduce our fame. For the person we are declaring war on spreads news through the land. This year the Church, in an effort to stop the presses, hath hired the Bentwood Raiders to declare war on Erin. We will truly see if the pen is mightier than the sword!"
